2013 marks a decade of Crime Writing Festivals in Harrogate and, as part of the celebrations, Val McDermid returns as Programming Chair. Val chaired the inaugural Festival in 2003 and the two following Festivals in 2004 & 2005.Here’s a word from the 2013 Chair herself:
When I was ‘persuaded’ to chair the Programming Committee for the first Harrogate Crime Writing Festival all those years ago, what tempted me to take it on was the prospect of helping to showcase the range and quality of contemporary crime writing. I know that my passion for this genre is shared by the thousands of readers who have attended our events over the years, and we’ve all had some memorable encounters with those writers who have given us so much delicious, disturbing terror over the years. 2013 will be no different. I’m as excited as I was back then, and I promise you’ll have a weekend to remember at the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival. Plans are already under way, and some of the treats in store include Ruth Rendell interviewed by Jeanette Winterson, Charlaine Harris, Kate Atkinson and Susan Hill. We’ll be covering the glorious gory (and cosy) spectrum of crime fiction, and you’ll take away a list of new novels to keep you awake long into the night. So block out that weekend in your diary, and join us here in Harrogate.
