Weekly sessions, year round: Music and singing for teenage mothers and their children

Now in its 5th year, Musical Mums is a highly successful initiative working with teenage mothers, creating a welcoming environment and promoting positive interaction between mums and their children through music. The weekly sessions involve music creation and singing, encouraging the children to respond in a positive manner to the music and to the sounds of their mothers’ voices. The sessions offer the mothers and their children the opportunity to create positive bonds, learn together in a fun environment, gain new skills and confidence and make new friends.

Thank you very much for running the Musical Mums sessions. Me and my son have really enjoyed it so far, so a big thank you.

- Young Parent

Sessions also offer opportunities for signposting to guidance on healthcare, housing, education, training and employment opportunities as well as access to additional social activities such as baby swim sessions. This signposting is made possible by working in partnership with Connexions, SureStart, Bumps2Babes (the local midwifery service) and other partners with a wealth of information and advice. Through these partners the project is able to have a greater impact, encouraging mothers to participate in other activities and providing support and guidance. Involvement in additional signposted activities continues to demonstrate far-reaching benefits for young mothers’ educational and working lives, along with their emotional wellbeing and that of their children.

Bus fares are reimbursed for all of the mothers so there is no cost involved in attending sessions and Musical Mums works with various partners to encourage and enable the mothers to attend regularly.

I never used to sing with my kid because I felt a bit daft, but now we’ve learnt loads of songs and actions and it’s really fun. I try and carry it on at home too, she stops crying when we sing!

- Young Parent

Sessions run on Friday afternoons, 2-3pm @

Urban literature and music workshops for young people

Harrogate International Festival’s brand new programme Rhymes and Crimes debuted in Spring 2012, offering young people at risk of anti-social behaviour an engaging alternative with this unique urban music and writing project.

The project has been developed from the hugely successful Divas and DJs project that has taken place in Harrogate for the past five years, but instead of running for just one week the new programme extends across ten weeks and reaches different areas of the city, recognised as areas of multiple-deprivation. The weekly workshops included the chance to learn new skills with professional DJs, learn to MC, mix tracks and perform, as well as the chance to work with the resident writer to create lyrics for the tracks. Using crime scenes, crime fiction and by addressing issues in their community, participants were given a new voice to communicate their feelings, perceptions and own personal circumstances, and benefit from the skills learnt through expressing themselves through the written word.

Victoria Hislop is a phenomenally successful novelist. Her first novel, 2005′s The Island, was selected by The Times as one of the 100 books that defined that decade. Educated at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, Victoria began her career in publishing before moving

into PR. Becoming a mother in 1990 was the catalyst for a career change and she started work as a freelance journalist. She branched into travel journalism before becoming a novelist.

Embracing a Greek backdrop, The Island held the number one slot in the Sunday Times paperback charts for eight consecutive weeks and has sold over two million copies worldwide. Her second novel, The Return, was also a Sunday Times bestseller, and her books have been translated into more than 20 languages. The Thread is the third and latest of her Greek odysseys.

Hislop’s fast-paced narrative and utterly convincing sense of place make her novel a rare treat.

Michael Frayn is one of the most acclaimed writers at work in Britain today. A modern master, acclaimed for his outstanding journalism, brilliant comic and cerebral plays and subtle novels, he is one of our finest contemporary writers best known for the long-running and much-loved farce, Noises Off. His dramas Copenhagen and Democracy recently featured in a high profile retrospective of his work. His latest novel Skios is a story of mislaid identity, misdirected passion and miscalculated consequences set on the Greek island.

Frayn boasts a résumé that would make even Gore Vidal feel inadequate … 15 plays; 10 novels; screenplays; he’s translated Chekhov and Tolstoy and won so many literary awards and medals that if he wore them all at once, he’d look like one of those Soviet generals on top of Lenin’s tomb on May Day. He is, in so many words, a significant literary personage.
