Morning birdsong on a summer’s day…but hark! It’s the Bard of Barnsley delivering digital tweets. It’s literally poetry in motion.

Most mornings, well-known poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan takes an early morning stroll and shares what he sees and hears through his extremely popular and funny Early Stroll tweets. Presented by Ian McMillan, the afternoon recital features a selection of songs from composer Richard Barnard using the texts of the tweets as well as John Rutter’s song cycle, Shadows.

For the Early Birds among you, why not join Ian on an Early Morning Stroll through the beautiful Valley Gardens? We are offering 10 lucky people the opportunity to
accompany Ian as he takes his famous Early Morning Stroll.

Simply write your own Early Stroll Poem and share on Twitter tagging @HarrogateFest and @IMcMillan in your post. Places are limited and the lucky winners will be announced on Tuesday 20 June.

“On my early drizzly stroll I pretend I’m in a film noir walking the mean streets of LA. Until a bloke with a dog says ‘R8 kid! Cold ‘un!’”
