Please note this event has now taken place.

Featuring the enchanting voice of tenor Joshua Ellicott (Jack’s Great-Nephew) and pianist Simon Lepper, this unique event follows the story of young war volunteer, Jack Ellicott, on his difficult journey from initial training to the battle of the Somme. Songs by Bridge, Ireland and Debussy are interspersed with dramatic readings from the letters sent by the 19 year-old Jack back to his parents.

We follow him from his initial training in Blackpool to the battle front. At times funny, surprising and deeply moving, the letters trace the ups and downs of an ordinary soldier with all the accompanying joys and sorrows. We sympathise with him over his girlfriends, we feel his homesickness and are finally gutted by the horrifying waste of his final demise.

The piece speaks for the many thousands of soldiers like him – for the ‘Everyman’ of that Great War.
