Berwins Salon North is a revolutionary movement for the heart and mind; consisting of a night of the most stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology designed to change your life for the better. Join three expert speakers for three inspiring TED-style talks on the theme of ‘Daring’, the final event in our ‘Sharing, Caring, Daring’ series, interspersed with intervals allowing time for a well-crafted G&T! Expect the remarkable!
Raoul Martinez, writer, artist, and award-winning filmmaker, will share the findings from his ground-breaking first book Creating Freedom. The ideal of freedom is at the heart of our political and economic system. It is foundational to our sense of justice, our way of life, our conception of what it is to be human. But are we free in the way that we think we are? Raoul Martinez will bring together a torrent of mind-expanding ideas, facts and arguments to dismantle sacred myths central to our society – myths about free will, free markets, free media and free elections. From the lottery of our birth to the consent-manufacturing influence of concentrated wealth and power, Raoul will lift the veil on the mechanisms of control that pervade our lives, showing us that the more we understand how the world shapes us, the more effectively we can shape the world.
Across 2017, our Salon’s will take a journey through artificial intelligence and who best to lead this than Prof. Steve Fuller, asking the question, can we afford to live forever? Transhumanism is a subject that divides many. Driven by the prediction the technology enabling us to upload our consciousness to a machine will be available as soon as 2043, this is a serious subject we really need to address. Join this leading academic, who will tell you this reality is already here and if life-extending technology is not made available democratically what’s to stop those who can afford the tech exerting a thousand year rule? Open your mind to the future possibilities and the philosophical questions of replacing the bits of us that don’t last.
Our final take on Daring comes in the form of Dave Randall, formerly a guitarist in Faithless (see back to our January sharing Salon – there’s a Faithless theme at play!) and has also worked with Sinead O’Connor and Dido to name but a few. Years of touring, playing and protesting have given Dave an insider’s view of the music industry, enabling him to shed light on the secrets of celebrity, commodification and culture. He has found remarkable examples of music as a force of social change as well as something that has been used to keep people in their place throughout history. Music has been used to unsettle the most fundamental political and social conventions – and to prop up the status-quo. Hear the story of one musician’s journey to discover what really makes music so powerful!
