Tickets are selling fast for the final event of this year’s Berwins Salon North series, which enticingly explores the world of Magic.

Three expert speakers deliver TED-style talks on the theme, interspersed with intervals allowing time for a well-crafted gin and tonic.

Helen Bagnall, curator and co-founder of Berwins Salon North developed in partnership with Harrogate International Festivals, said: “When it comes to magic, think more Derren Brown than Paul Daniels! Our culture has always been bewitched and beguiled by the concept of magic, from the paranormal to hypnosis. This promises to be one of the most fascinating Salon’s to date.”

Our belief in astrology, the paranormal, aliens, ghosts and all forms of supernatural magic have formed the basis of Prof Christopher French’s academic studies.  He leads the way in the field of anomalistic psychology at Goldsmith’s University, exploring just why we have a psychological need for the paranormal and what our need for it reveals about ourselves.

Doug Segal is a British comedy performer known for his award winning live mindreading acts:  I Know What You’re Thinking, How to Read Minds and Influence People and I Can Make You A Mentalist. He’ll be in conversation with Helen Bagnall, who will be asking him about the art of mind-reading, and how we can learn to do it.

Jo Marchant is an award-winning science journalist, a former editor at Nature and New Scientist, and has conducted a rigorous investigation in to the role of the mind in health, which is the subject of her book Cure – A Journey into the Science of Mind over Body.  Jo will explain what the mind really can do when it comes to health, from placebos to hypnosis, and from social connectivity to meditation; it’s a kind of magic.

Berwins MD, Sarah Smith said “We’re incredibly proud to sponsor Salon North and to have witnessed it grow into such a success – it’s become the talk of the town!

“At Berwins, we work with people at the most important times in their lives and understand the difference care and excellence in the legal work we deliver makes – it’s the reason we’re proud to say we’re no ordinary lawyers.

“Berwins Salon North engages with what it means to be human, philosophically, emotionally and intellectually.  It’s a great alignment to help support the Festivals bring such leading minds to Harrogate in this innovative series, but fundamentally we believe it’s important to support the Arts in the community in which we live and work.”

Gemma Rowland, Operations Manager at Harrogate International Festivals, said: “Berwins Salon North has become one of the most innovative and exciting strands of the Festival and has built a strong following. Once seen, you’re hooked! The last event sold-out with a 200-strong audience, so do secure tickets early to avoid disappointment.”

The Salon events were voted by GQ magazine as one of the ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World’. Delivered by Harrogate International Festivals and sponsored by Berwins, it offers the most stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology, designed to change your life for the better.
