Returning for Autumn, each Salon event consists of three expert speakers who deliver TED-style talks exploring the series themes of Revolution, Evolution and Constitution.

Evolution is our next Berwins Salon North Event on Thursday 30th November at 7.30pm

Three incredible speakers talk Evolution:

Michael Brooks

Humans have been trying to make sense of the universe since they first looked up at the stars, but how far have we progressed?

Brooks guides us through quantum theory’s prominent mysteries in his extraordinary book – The Quantum Astrologers Handbook. How can a photon “know” it’s being observed? How do “virtual” particles pop in and out of existence? Is the universe “super-determined”, its atoms already linked to, and influencing, each other in ways that are preordained? The physicist John Wheeler once wrote that the quantum “cracks the armor that conceals the secret of existence”. The armour is tough, Brooks tells us; we are only a few steps ahead of Cardano on the road to understanding. The Financial Times, 13 October 2017

There is so much that we are yet to understand and it’s a conversation that is much bigger than we can comprehend but Michael Brooks will provide some fascinating insight into making sense of the Universe!

Dr Tiffany Watt-Smith

Michael’s talk may leave you feeling overwhelmed, happy, shocked…. Whichever emotion it may be, each feeling has its own story.

So riveting are Dr Tiffany Watt-Smith’s miniature essays exploring 156 emotions that if anyone interrupts your reading, you’ll probably feel irritated. Eloquently interweaving scientific, philosophical and literary thought, from ancient to modern beliefs, the book is “a gesture against those arguments that try to reduce the beautiful complexity of our inner lives into just a handful of cardinal emotions”. The Guardian, 11 October 2015

A thought provoking tour around our feelings and a talk that will leave you wanting to delve into the topic in greater detail as soon as you leave.

James Thornton

ClientEarth won a High Court battle a year ago which forced the Government to publish new plans to tackle the issue of clean air. But the law group claims that the proposals did not go far enough to bring air pollution to within legal limits as soon as possible. CEO James Thornton continues the fight for a better world and he will join us in Harrogate to explain how we can fight for change, and how everyone can play a role in evolving towards a healthier planet.

Come along to a night with a  difference, grab yourself a drink and settle in for three fascinating and varied talks on Evolution. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and debate these issues throughout the evening.
