Camilla George
Camilla George, the Nigerian-born British saxophonist, composer and bandleader, brings her unmistakable sound to the Spiegeltent as this year’s Guest Curator. Born in Eket, Nigeria and raised in West London, Camilla is renowned for weaving together African and Western musical traditions and stands at the forefront of London’s vibrant jazz scene.
Her 2017 debut album Isang was a bright, glorious mix of calypso, swing, improv and jazz standards, while follow-up The People Could Fly took inspiration from African folktales and stories that enslaved people passed down to their children. For this special performance, Camilla performs music from her most recent album Ibio-Ibio, which celebrates her roots, through the music of the Ibibio people of southern Nigeria, alongside a mixture of new music.
Accompanied by her band, George creates a night full of deep groove and fearless improvisation.
