Classical Unlocked Presents: Vulva Voce & Alexandra Whittingham
Classical Unlocked spotlights artists who bring a new energy to classical music, and there’s no better place to experience it than the Spiegeltent. Vulva Voce is a band which rewrites the ‘string quartet’ as we know it. Taking influence from folk, jazz, classical, techno and funk, they write original music which honours women’s stories from throughout history. Alongside their originals, they perform music from the 1500s right up to the present day. They reference the music of the first ever published woman composer, Maddalena Casulana and take inspiration from the warrior queen of the Iceni Tribe, Boudicca.
Recognised by The Guardian as “a young 21st-century virtuoso”, Alexandra Whittingham is rapidly redefining the role of the classical guitarist in today’s musical landscape. Recent highlights include a performance at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for Classic FM Live, a UK tour with duo partner Stephanie Jones, and a 43-date North American tour as part of International Guitar Night.
Original. Trailblazing. Unique.
