It isn’t just here at the Old Swan Hotel that the spirit of the woman who gave butlers a bad rep lingers. Agatha Christie’s famous detective Poirot is reincarnated by Sophie Hannah, with critics praising her for doing the ‘grande dame of crime proud’. The New York Times and Sunday Times top ten bestseller, Ruth Ware, was inspired by Christie, watching Poirot and Miss Marple as a child, before devouring Christie’s books.
Switching the focus from Cumberbatch’s Sherlock reboot Michelle Birkby focuses on The Women of Baker Street, with her Mrs Hudson and Mary Watson investigations series. Awarded an OBE for her services to the arts, award-winning novelist, playwright, actress and theatre-maker Stella Duffy, who spent her childhood in New Zealand, is completing an unfinished novel by New Zealand’s Queen of Crime, Ngaio Marsh. Rounding up the suspects and checking their alibis is chair Andrew Wilson who has A Talent for Murder – his compelling series with Agatha Christie at its heart.
