Berwins Salon North is a revolutionary movement for the heart and mind; consisting of a night of the most stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology designed to change your life for the better. Join three expert speakers for three inspiring TED-style talks on the theme of ‘Narrate’, the first event in our ‘Narrate, Celebrate, Illuminate’ series, interspersed with intervals allowing time for refreshments at the bar and lively discussion on the topics of the evening. Expect the remarkable!

Turns out, the answers to life’s questions are not in trite self-help manuals, but in the tough-love lessons of Russian literature. Hear comedian and broadcaster Viv Groskop delve in to the classics, blending the passionate messages of Chekhov and Turgenev with her own experience to reveal enduring truths about how we should live. Witty, entertaining and so relevant to today.

For decades we have been told that development is working, yet since 1960 the global income gap between North & South has tripled. 4.3 billion people live on less than $5 per day, while the richest eight control the same wealth as the poorest half of the world. Anthropologist Jason Hickel challenges the story that aid will eradicate poverty, telling us what’s really causing the great divide and what we can do about it.

When apes were evolving and emerging out of Africa, what was it about the landscape and climate that meant humanity alone survived? Mark Maslin, a professor of paleoclimatology, will share the story of our beginning, why we became so smart and how our profound impact on the environment continues today.
