The Big Read

The North of England’s Biggest Book Club

The Big Read brings communities across the North of England together through a shared love of books.

Led by the Festival’s Reader-in-Residence, the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival hits the road each year with the Big Read, a touring book club designed to develop reluctant readers into active ones, support libraries, and spark conversations about great crime fiction in towns and cities across the North of England.

Drawing on the appeal of crime and thriller writing – the UK’s most popular genre – and its popularity with TV viewers, the North of England’s biggest Book Club visits both rural and urban areas where reading levels are low. By hosting free events in libraries and community spaces, the initiative ensures that everyone – whether a seasoned reader or someone just starting their reading journey – has the opportunity to experience the joy of a great crime novel.

Each year, the Big Read selects a different title, offering free copies to participating libraries to make reading as accessible as possible. Whether attending an event in person or reading along remotely, participants can join the conversation, share their thoughts, and engage with the story in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

With the power of books to inspire, entertain, and connect, the Big Read continues to grow, bringing the excitement of the UK’s most popular literary genre to new audiences. Whether you’re a crime fiction fan or just discovering the genre, the Big Read invites you to pick up a book, join the discussion, and be part of the North of England’s biggest book club!
