Award-winning string quartet’s Harrogate grand finale

The Fibonacci string quartet on stage playing.

The Fibonacci Quartet, widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading young string quartets, brings this year’s Harrogate International Sunday Series to a close in a grand finale on April 6.

The multi-prize-winning quartet – the only ever ensemble to win both first and audience prizes at the Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition in Italy (2024) – will perform works by Haydn, Smetana and Beethoven in their recital at The Old Swan Hotel.

Originally formed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the Fibonaccis are a Resident Ensemble at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid with Günter Pichler and at the Dutch String Quartet Academy in Amsterdam. And following public finals at Wigmore Hall in May last year, they were selected to join the Young Classical Artist Trust (YCAT) roster.

The Fibonaccis have made a name as one of classical music’s most exciting young ensembles. “It is so important to us that classical music is something that is living and breathing, not an artefact in a museum,” the quartet said. “We hope that our spontaneous approach to this repertoire can make the messages from these great composers immediate and relevant to our audiences and speak with the same clarity and depth that they did on the day they were written.”

Sharon Canavar, Harrogate International Festivals Chief Executive, said: “This year’s Sunday Series has once again seen some of the most gifted young musicians of their generation grace the stage here in Harrogate.

“We have seen some amazing performances so far and I can’t think of a more fitting way to bring the 2025 Sunday Series to a close than with the brilliant Fibonacci Quartet. The audience is in for a real treat and I, for one, can’t wait!

All of the Sunday Series concerts take place at the beautiful Old Swan Hotel, which provides an intimate setting to enjoy a morning coffee and exceptional music with friends.
