Award-winning US wind ensemble blows into town

Harrogate Music Festival has a long tradition of attracting internationally renowned musicians, orchestras and ensembles, and the award-winning Grand Symphonic Winds (GSW) is the latest to grace the Harrogate stage.

The Minnesota-based ensemble, arguably the best symphonic wind band in the United States, will be performing in the intimate and atmospheric surroundings of St Wilfrid’s Church on June 27.

Their brilliant and eclectic Harrogate programme includes Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Dance Suite’ from On the Town, Gustav Holst’s ‘First Suite in E Flat for Military Band’, and Arthur Honegger’s ‘Mar sur la Bastille.’

Over the past 25 years, Grand Symphonic Winds has performed across the US as well as taking their original music to audiences around the world. Created as a civic wind ensemble, the group strives to expand and redefine the perception of what constitutes a concert band.

Part of the ethos of Grand Symphonic Winds is to entertain and educate audiences, and broaden their musical horizons, something that has continued under the leadership of music director Matthew J George, who will be with the band in Harrogate.

Sharon Canavar, chief executive of Harrogate International Festivals, said: “Grand Symphonic Winds have wowed audiences wherever they go, and as the only international ensemble performing at this year’s Music Festival we are delighted to welcome them to Harrogate.

“They are performing at the much loved St Wilfrid’s Church which will be a spectacular setting for what promises to be a memorable concert, and at just £5 a ticket it’s got to be the music bargain of the year!”
