Young Musicians Series programme announced for Summer 2023
Following this year’s second Berwins Salon North in April, Harrogate International Festivals is preparing for its next exciting event in June with booking now open.
Berwins Salon North is Harrogate’s very own series of TED-style talks and has become a popular fixture on the town’s cultural calendar. Presenting big ideas, and answering key questions in life, Salon was voted number six in the ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World’ by GQ magazine.
Being held on Thursday 8th June, at 7.30pm, at the Crown Hotel, Berwins Salon North’s ‘Electric Lives’ will bring together three brilliant speakers all exploring the sparks that make our lives vibrant and full, whether that’s the joy that comes from listening to our favourite pieces of music, the literal sparks that fly through our bodies’ bioelectricity, or the catalyst of knowing our lives are only finite that ignites our passion to make the most of the time we have.
Award-winning science writer Sally Adee will explore the history and application of bioelectricity, asking whether it is possible to control the bioelectricity in our bodies and exploring the health implications. From Galvani’s epic eighteenth-century battle with the inventor of the battery, Alessandro Volta, to the medical charlatans claiming to use electricity to cure pretty much anything, through to today’s laboratories where we are starting to see real-world medical applications being developed, Sally Adee will take us on a fascinating and surprising journey through the science of our bodies’ bio-electrome.
Musician and writer Oliver Condy will take the role of musical physician, using his years of experience to prescribe remedies for all manner of ailments in the form of classical music and offer musical prescriptions that offer comfort, solace and strength in the face of dark times. Whether you suffer from loneliness or laziness, from bereavement or betrayal, a heartbreak or a mere hangover, here you’ll find the perfect piece of classical music to heal the heart, soothe the soul and cure the maladies of the modern world.
The final speaker, Oliver Burkeman, will ask how best we can use our ridiculously brief time on the planet, which amounts on average to about four thousand weeks. Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers, he will reject the futile modern obsession with ‘getting everything done,’ and set out to realign our relationship with time – and in doing so, to liberate us from its tyranny.
This trio of speakers will once again be hosted by Helen Bagnall, at the event sponsored by Berwins Solicitors and produced by Harrogate International Festivals.
Martin Whincup, from Berwins Solicitors, said: “This event promises to be a very special evening which uncovers incredible insights across science, music, and philosophy.
“As with all Berwin Salon North events, the audience should expect each of these expert talks to stir the soul and expand our understanding of the world.”
Tickets for the event, priced at £17, are available to book online here or by call the Box Office on 01423 562303.
