The Board and Exec of Harrogate International Festivals were sad to hear the news that our Honorary President Dame Fanny Waterman has died.
Her enthusiasm and support for HIF over the years was unmeasured from her early masterclasses with pupil Ben Frith, to her attendance and enthusiasm for artists that prompted many journeys down rickety steps, regardless of age, to the backstage areas of venues, to tell an artist they were truly ‘mahhvelous and you must come to my little piano competition’.
Fiona Movley, Chair of HIF said today: “Her passion and tenacity will be greatly missed. We have lost a true great in the world of music and the arts.”
Sharon Canavar, CE of HIF went on to say: “When I became CE in 2009, I visited Dame Fanny at Woodgarth and she told me, without being asked, that she would be delighted to become our Honorary President. Her support, enthusiasm for life and music, along with an indomitable networking capacity, meant an incredibly steep learning curve!
It was a fitting association in the last decade of her life, given her passion for the arts in Yorkshire and we were thrilled to have her input as a friend over the years”
We send our deepest condolences to her family. The arts world is poorer for her loss.
The full announcement, biography of her life and archive images of Dame Fanny are available to view through the Leeds International Piano Competition.
