Berwins Salon North welcomes rock star mythologist Natalie Haynes
Shortlisted author, broadcaster and comedian Natalie Haynes will join researcher and podcaster Melanie Challenger and writer and producer Horatio Clare at Berwins Salon North on 19 May. The trio of expert guest speakers will deliver TED style talks on the theme ‘What Makes Us Human’.
Berwins Salon North is a cabaret style evening designed to excite your curiosity and change your life for the better. In a time of polarised debate and online shouting, it gives you the time and space to learn from the experts and make up your own mind. Each expert speaker has the challenge of engaging their audience within a 25 minute set, interspersed with intervals and time for a well-crafted G&T.
Dubbed a ‘rock-star mythologist’ by The Washington Post, Natalie Haynes is famed for her novels, including A Thousand Ships, which was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2020, and for her BBC Radio 4 broadcast ‘Natalie Haynes Stands up for the Classics’. Her most recent non-fiction book, Pandora’s Jar, was first published in 2020 and has topped the New York Times Bestseller list for the last month.
Natalie will be joined by acclaimed travel writer Horatio Clare, who, after a catastrophic mental breakdown in 2018, wrote his memoir ‘Heavy Light‘, detailing his journey through mania, psychosis, sectioning, treatment and recovery. He will share his deeply personal account of how the mind loses touch with reality, how we fall apart and how we can be healed – or not – by treatment.
Award-winning researcher and podcaster Melanie Challenger completes the trio of guest speakers with her radical take on what it means to be human. Her critically acclaimed book, ‘How To Be Animal‘, argues that at the heart of our psychology is a profound struggle with being animal, and asks us how well we really know ourselves.
As ever, our guest speakers will be bound together by the inimitable Helen Bagnall. Hear what she has to say about the line-up for May’s Berwins Salon North in the video below.
