Concert by Candlelight

Experience the bold and thrilling sound world of British vocal ensemble, The Marian Consort in the wonderful candlelit setting of St Wilfrid’s Church. The ensemble is a collective of artists and collaborators, with the line-up flexible according to their programme.

Featuring regularly on UK and international television and radio, the ensemble performs imaginative programmes of music from the twelfth century to the present day. Performing at the Festival as part of our Gigs at Gaia, The Marian Consort will perform a diverse concert titled The Language of Flowers, a concert inspired by this year’s Earth theme. This exploration of flowers, gardens and all things earthy and earthly, both actual and allegorical, combines rich, expressive choral works by Renaissance composers, evoking lush landscapes and themes of love, nature, and spiritual longing with atmospheric new works from Leo Chadburn, Hugo Bell and Nneka Cummins.

The concert will last c.2 hours including a 20 minute interval.

At 7pm, Founder and Director Rory McCleery will give a pre-concert talk, in which he will talk about the World Premieres of Nneka Cummins’ Awake and Hugo Bell’s Hermitage, along with other repertoire selected for the evening.
