The book “How Labour Wins” examines Labour’s successes and failures in the 33 British General Elections since 1900. It provides an accessible history, analysing how left-wing politics has succeeded or failed. The book explores Labour’s strategies, leadership, and transformative moments, offering insights from former leaders like Gordon Brown and Neil Kinnock. It concludes with an analysis of the landslide result of the July 4th, 2024, General Election, discussing how Keir Starmer can capitalise on his victory to deliver the changes promised in Labour’s manifesto.

Douglas Beattie has first-hand experience of elections having stood for Parliament as the Scottish Labour candidate in the 2017 General Election and also been a Labour councillor. He now lives in London and works as a trade union media and political director. Beattie is fascinated by tribal divisions and his previous book is an acclaimed history of British football derbies,The Rivals Game, Inside the British Derby.

“A timely and brilliantly illuminating book that offers much needed context to the 2024 general election. A must read”Steve Richards
