In a world dominated by other people’s opinions, Salon gives you the knowledge to form your own.

Three expert speakers deliver TED-style talks designed to change your life for the better. Presenting big ideas, and answering key questions in life, Salon was voted as number six in the ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World’ by GQ magazine.

In a time of polarised debate and online shouting it is Berwins Salon North that gives you the time and space to learn from the experts and make up your own mind. This cabaret style evening is designed to change your life for the better and excite your curiosity.

We present the most stimulating ideas in arts, science and psychology. Each expert speaker has the challenge of engaging their audience within a 25-minute set, interspersed with intervals and time for a well-crafted G&T. Our Salon evenings are Harrogate’s own style of live TED talks, where you’re guaranteed to learn something new about yourself and the world around you.

HOW TO THINK

We think we know how to think, but get ready to hear that there’s an awful lot more to think about than we first thought (phew!)

At Berwins Salon North this September, we’re looking again at how we think and make decisions, and what can really influence those thoughts. From the wisdom and joy we can gain from books (and the shops we buy them from) to uncovering the mysteries of the brain, it turns out there’s more to thinking than you might think!

Uncover the mind-blowing complexities of the brain and how it affects our personalities, behaviours and more with Professor Sophie Scott, from diving into the networks of neurons that are vital to our functioning, to the way our brains differ from one another and how neuroscience is shaping up for the future.

Robin Ince, co-presenter of The Infinite Monkey Cage, takes us on a journey across Britain as he explores his lifelong love of bookshops and books – and also tried to find out just why he can never have enough of them.

After a decade of living with panic attacks and anxiety, Tim Clare made a promise to try everything he could to get better, from anti-depressants to hypnosis, running to extreme diets. Discover what helped him (and what didn’t) and rethink anxiety.

Our trio of speakers will be tied together by the fabulous Helen Bagnall.

*Line-up subject to change. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, Susie Alegre is no longer able to attend.

After a decade of living with panic attacks and anxiety, Tim Clare made a promise to try everything he could to get better, from anti-depressants to hypnosis, running to extreme diets. Discover what helped him (and what didn’t) and rethink anxiety.

Tim Clare is a writer, poet and musician. He won Best Biography/Memoir at the East Anglian Book Awards for his first book, We Cant All Be Astronauts, while his fiction debut, The Honours, was longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize. He has performed his work at festivals and clubs across the world, on BBC TV and radio. Tim has also written for the GuardianThe Times, the Independent, and the Big Issue, and presents the fiction writing podcast Death Of 1000 Cuts.

Uncover the mind-blowing complexities of the brain and how it affects our personalities, behaviours and more.

Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL Sophie Scott guides you through the astounding complexities of the organ that makes you, you. From diving into the networks of neurons that are vital to our functioning, to the way our brains differ from one another and how neuroscience is shaping up for the future.

If you have ever wondered what’s going on inside your head (or someone else’s), Sophie Scott is here to tell you.

Sophie Scott CBE FBA FMedSci is a British Cognitive Neuroscientist and Director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London (UCL). She has been researching the human brains since the 1990s, and has published over 130 peer reviewed papers, was the 2017 Royal Institution Christmas Lecturer, and she was awarded the Royal Society’s Michael Faraday prize and lecture in 2021.

Why play to 12,000 people when you can play to 12? In Autumn 2021, Robin Ince‘s stadium tour with Professor Brian Cox was postponed due to the pandemic. Rather than do nothing, he decided instead to go on a tour of over a hundred bookshops in the UK, from Wigtown to Penzance; from Swansea to Margate.

With witty anecdotes and tall tales, Ince takes the reader on a journey across Britain as Robin explores his lifelong love of bookshops and books – and also tries to find out just why he can never have enough of them.

It is the story of an addiction and a Romance, and also of an occasional points failure just outside Oxenholme.

Robin Ince is co-presenter of the award-winning BBC Radio 4 show and podcast, The Infinite Monkey Cage. He has toured his award-winning stand-up across the world, both solo and with his radio double-act partner, Professor Brian Cox. He is the author of I’m a Joke and So Are You and The Importance of Being Interested.
