Bringing the joy of classical music to Harrogate
In a recent interview ahead of City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s opening night concert at the Royal Hall for this summer’s Harrogate Music Festival, CBSO’s Section Leader Clarinet said: “Nothing can transport you somewhere quite like live music.”
“It’s great listening to music on your headphones at home but actually experiencing it and feeling the floor vibrate when the orchestra’s really going, nothing can recreate that.”
He was right, and over the coming days the HACS Harrogate Music Festival is offering up a veritable treat for classical music fans, reinforcing its reputation for giving a platform to some of the best talent not only from the UK, but around the world.
St Wilfrid’s Church is the stunning setting for Apollo5’s candlelight performance which promises to be a memorable occasion. This award-winning vocal ensemble, praised by the likes of BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and Gramophone Magazine, will be performing songs from their album, Invocation, on July 11.
This breathtaking church is also the setting for a performance from Young Musician Amiri Harewood, this year’s recipient of the Dorothy Parkinson Memorial Award. Harewood, who is currently studying at the Royal College of Music on a full scholarship, will perform an exciting programme featuring works by Beethoven and Mussorgsky, earlier in the day on July 11.
With more than 415,000 followers on TikTok alone, music sensation Esther Abrami’s performance at The Crown Hotel on July 10 is one of the hottest tickets in town. The French-born violinist, who studied at the Royal College of Music, is seen as one of the most promising young classical artists of her generation and was included in Classic FM’s 30 Under 30 to watch.
The 27-year-old star will perform an exciting mix of traditional classical pieces alongside works from her new album Cinema, which features new arrangements of blockbuster hits including ‘The Witcher’ and ‘The Hunger Games’.
Another big draw is acclaimed guitar and violin duo Plínio Fernandes and Braimah Kanneh-Mason, who will bring this year’s Harrogate Music Festival to a close on July 13 at The Crown Hotel.
