Acclaimed pianist makes Harrogate debut in Sunday Series concert

Piano virtuoso Daniel Lebhardt will make his bow at the popular Harrogate International Sunday Series later this month.

The Hungarian-born musician will take to the stage on 18 February with a diverse programme that includes Romantic works by Brahms and Scriabin, alongside pieces by influential composers Bartok and Ligeti from his homeland.

For the past 30 years, the Harrogate International Sunday Series has delighted audiences by bringing world-class chamber and classical musicians to the heart of Yorkshire, and Daniel’s performance is the latest in this year’s exciting programme of uplifting Sunday morning coffee concerts.

The prize-winning pianist, praised by The New York Times for his “power, poetry and formidable technique”, has given concertos with the Hallé, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Philharmonic of Ukraine. He has performed all over the world, including at such prestigious venues as Wigmore Hall, St David’s Hall and the Kennedy Center, in Washington DC.

His recent recordings include music by Bartók, and violin sonatas by Copland, Prokofiev and Poulenc with Benjamin Baker.

Speaking ahead of his debut in Harrogate, Daniel said: “I always try to have my concert programmes follow some sort of a narrative, where there is a logic or a connecting motive that makes the succession of the pieces more organic.

“Though this programme leans towards the more obscure, there is a huge array of light and shade and contrast present that I hope my Harrogate audience will find intriguing and captivating.”

Sharon Canavar, Chief Executive of Harrogate International Festivals said: “The Harrogate International Sunday Series has been platforming exceptionally talented pianists for the last three decades, with our popular Sunday morning concerts featuring the most gifted pianists of their generation.

“In recent years, we have been fortunate enough to welcome artists including BBC Young Musician finalist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason and Leeds Piano Competition winner Alim Beisembayev. 2024 is set to be no different, and we’re delighted to welcome rising star Daniel Lebhardt to the Harrogate stage.”

All of the Sunday Series concerts take place at the beautiful Old Swan Hotel, which provides an intimate setting to enjoy a morning coffee and exceptional music with friends.
